Advocates of Evolution Teaching Win in Kansas
OVERLAND PARK, Kan., (AP-Reuters) - Supporters of the teaching of evolution welcomed on Wednesday [8-2-2000] a vote ousting two Kansas state school board members who were set on reducing its place in education, but at least one of those voted out was undaunted by the setback.
The result on Tuesday all but ensured that whatever the outcome of the November general election, the board of education will be primed to undo a controversial 6-4 vote in August last year that allowed local school districts to determine what, if anything, to teach science students about evolution.

Bumper year for Sasquatch Sightings
Washington State
Cliff Crook and teams of
Bigfoot trackers and enthusiasts report that this very well could be the
summer of the sasquatch. Crook’s Bigfoot Central – a tracking and
research center based out of his Bothell, Washington home has logged 11
sightings in the Pacific Northwest since May, a record number, he said.
One report by Mary C. Williams, who lives on the Hoh Reservation on the
Olympic Peninsula, said she and her husband noticed a set of curiously
large footprints behind their home. She said her husband heard an
intense banging sound and found animal hairs near the prints.

Quantum Mirage
San Jose, CA
Something bizarre has popped
up in the laboratory of physicist Donald Eigler, and no one is quite sure
what to make of it. It’s the world’s smallest ghost, a phantom on
an atomic scale. Eigler and colleagues at IBM’s Almaden Research
Center in San Jose, California, call it a “quantum mirage” because it projects
an atom’s electronic signature to another place while the atom itself stays
put.

Michael Cremo will present his paper “The Discoveries of Carlos Ribeiro:
A Controversial Episode in XIXth Century European Archaeology”
THOUGHTS FROM MICHAEL
If there is so much evidence
for extreme human antiquity, why aren't archeologists finding more of it?
One problem is that they are not looking for it. Archaeology has become
quite specialized, and most research projects are designed to accumulate
data that will answer some specific question that needs answering in terms
of the current paradigm. Because the current paradigm has anatomically
modern humans coming into existence about one hundred thousand years ago,
archeologists generally look for skeletal and cultural remains of anatomically
modern humans in geological contexts no older than that. Indeed, much of
modern archeology is concerned with sites that are far younger than that.
Site identification tends to focus attention on fairly recent times. Many
sites are discovered by analysis of aerial photographs. Other sites are
uncovered during large highway construction projects across the countryside.
Of course, what becomes visible by such means is bound to be fairly recent.
These fairly recent Iron Age and late stone age sites tend to have large
scale recognizable features, such as boundary walls, trenches, house platforms,
garbage pits, and so on. They are recognizable even today as settlements
and villages. But older sites, from the Miocene, for example, may
not be so recognizable.
In this issue of my electronic
newsletter, I have given a report about my research into Miocene artifacts
from Portugal. These artifacts were discovered apparently isolated from
any other signs of a human presence in Miocene formations. Perhaps other
evidence for a human presence was in fact there, but not noticed. What
would a Miocene village site look like after millions of years? It
would be worthwhile for a new generation of archeologists to start contemplating
these questions, so that we can extend our search for a human presence
back into the more distant past.

Michael Cremo’s report
from Lisbon, Portugal
From July 10 to July 25,
2000 I was in Portugal doing research for a paper that has been accepted
for presentation at the European Association of Archeologists annual meeting,
which will be held in Lisbon in September. It is called “The Discoveries
of Carlos Ribeiro: A Controversial Episode in XIXth Century European Archaeology.”
The artifacts he found, although quite primitive, were discovered in deposits
belonging to the Miocene, a geological period that extends from about 5
to 20 million years ago. These discoveries and others like them attracted
considerable attention in the late nineteenth century, but were dropped
from discussion after the discovery of Java Man in the early 1890s. This
apeman, now considered to be Homo erectus, was found without any kind of
stone tools, in a geological context less than 1 million years old. So
what was to be done with the far older stone tools that had previously
been discovered? In my paper, I am suggesting that the theoretical
picture of human evolution that grew up around the Java Man discovery
was responsible for eliminating evidence such as Ribeiro's. My purpose
in presenting the paper is renew interest in this evidence for extreme
human antiquity.
Earlier this year, I contacted
the head of the national archeological organization in Portugal, and requested
permission to examine and photograph Ribeiro's artifacts and field notes,
maps, and letters. Permission was granted and I came to Lisbon earlier
this month. Ribeiro's artifacts are kept in the Museo Geologico, which
is located in the Academy of Sciences building in one of the older sections
of Lisbon. The director of the museum was quite helpful. Ribeiro's artifacts
were not on display in the museum, but were stored away. I went through
the collection, looking specifically for artifacts that he had described
and illustrated in his scientific publications. It was quite interesting
to be holding the artifacts in my hands, comparing them with 19th century
drawings of them and looking for matches. I found many of them. The artifacts
were very professionally photographed for me by an archeology student
from the science university in Budapest, Hungary.
Even this research phase
of writing my paper has yielded some interesting results. The museum director
has decided he wants to bring Ribeiro's artifacts out of storage
and again place them on display in the museum. He is also going to get
in touch with the organizers of the September conference about having a
special exhibit of the artifacts there.

Letters to www.mcremo.com:
Question: As a good
Fortean I, of course, read your material with some great interest and curiosity.
In the interest of actual debate on the matter of older-than-expected humanity,
I must ask you, who among your critics do you consider as having raised
the best objections to your anomalous research? Is there/are there
any particular scientists/geologists/paleobiologists who correspond with
you in a critical fashion and posit reasonable objections to your conclusions?
Yes, yes, I do understand about the whole suppression thing, but aren’t
the best examples of scientific knowledge arising from a synthesis of heated
argument? I know you’re busy, but if you could give a reply it would be
deeply appreciated.
Peter
Answer: Dear Peter,
Forbidden Archeology has
been the subject of numerous reviews in academic publications to which
I have replied. I also have had some personal correspondence with
various researchers. The best way for you to get a sense of all this
is for you to read my book Forbidden Archeology’s
Impact, where you can see the reviews and letters and my responses.
Sincerely yours,
Question: I have been
much impressed by your Forbidden Archeology research etc. and it’s a great
shame orthodox science/archeology, especially the type propagated by Richard
Leakey are so arrogant, blinkered and intransigent to new or alternative
discoveries like yours and Lloyd Pye …Below is something which you may
/ may not be familiar with with which continues to back up the alternative
view of history all the more. I have (in England) seen the unfortunate
slaughter of Graham Hancock’s series ‘Heaven’s Mirror – Quest for the Lost
Civilisation’ by the BBC’s Horizon programme. I do not agree with
all that Hancock proposes and have doubts especially from the point of
astrological/archeological alignments fixed to a particular time frame
world wide but much else ties up with a comprehensive hidden history all
the more backed up by people like yourself – Thank goodness for the “INTERNET”
for without which we would be far less well informed and like sheep follow
the tenets of the “Scientific Experts” of the present “World (Dis) Order”
who are all-knowing so they think! Wishing the best of luck with
your continued research. Please e-mail with any ideas/queries regarding
this, time permitting.

[He gave a link to The Serpent
Mound Mysteries website: http://greatserpentmound.org]
Answer: Dear Anton,
I am familiar with the reports
of giant skeletons, some with unusual features like two rows of teeth,
being found in the Midwestern US Indian mounds. I have not investigated
them in detail for a few reasons. My main interest is evidence for
extreme human antiquity – evidence that humans like us existed more than
the one or two hundred thousand years most scientists now accept.
The Indian mounds are by all accounts fairly recent, within the past couple
thousand years. Second, although the reports are there, I have not yet
seen any of the giant bones referred to, what to speak of those with two
rows of teeth. If you have any knowledge of where giant human bones
can be seen, let me know. When I was doing a little media tour of
New Zealand a year or so ago, I learned that there were supposedly some
bones of humans ten feet high in a natural history museum in Auckland.
But when I showed up to see them, it didn’t happen. There were cases
in the early nineteenth century when bones of other animals were identified
as human bones. That is not necessarily the case with all the discoveries,
but one does have to be careful about this. Also, even today, there
are a few people that are 7-8 feet tall. But when you get to 10 feet,
that is really strange. In any case, I do have an open mind about
these discoveries, and would like to know about any hard evidence that
supports the original reports.
Sincerely yours,
Question: I have read
your book and have enjoyed it greatly. In some of your discussions
you mentioned the possibility of advanced technological civilizations that
could have existed prior to our own. My question is this. Our
present civilization world wide moved from a hunter-gatherer society to
an agricultural to a technological society. Is this not correct?
Have you ran across any information that would indicate the culitivation
of grains (rice, wheat, corn etc.) has had a longer developmental history
than we were led to believe? (The full scale use of agriculture was
estimated to be 7,000 to 8,000 b.c.e.) And second, is there any indication
of plants which had one time been domesticated but have returned to a wild
state? Would there by any way to find out?
Thanks,
Answer: Dear Andy,
There are some scattered
cases of evidence for agriculture going back more than 8,000 b.c.e.
If you look in my book Forbidden Archeology, pp. 786-787, you will find
some evidence of wheat grains that gave AMS radiocarbon dates of about
16,000 and 33,000 years. Of course the dates could be wrong.
I do think that plants can go back to their wild state, but I don’t at
this point have any direct information about that. The question of
whether or not our present civilization moved in a linear fashion from
a hunter-gatherer society to an agricultural society to a technological
society, from a certain point in time, is one that should be looked at
according to the evidence that comes up. From traditional writings
of various cultures, a more cyclical picture emerges. And different
cultures may move in different ways.
Sincerely yours,
7-2-2000
In the mid 70s we lived in
the Black Hills of South Dakota. My wife and kids loved to visit the local
rock shops. At several of these rock shops I saw pieces of coal,
mostly from Wyoming, with what appeared to be spur gears embedded in them.
The people at the shops said that these were not spur gears but were the
remains of a form of ancient marine life. These were perfectly formed
gears complete with bore holes and keyways. They were PERFECT, they
looked like illustrations out of a gear catalog.
Ed
Michael Cremo responds:
Dear Ed,
It would be nice if you could
get some samples of the specimens, or at least some good photographs, in
color and black and white of the objects, with something next to them,
like a ruler or coin to show the scale. Also helpful would be to
try to determine what kind of material the gear is made of: crystalline,
rock, metal….or whatever. We could go from there. Sometimes
there are fossils of things that do look like machine parts, but I am openminded
enough to consider the possibility that what we are dealing with here is
possibly some sign of intelligent human life.
Send us your stories about
those anomalous alien skeletons discovered in the back yard! We are looking
for solid, well-documented evidence, but all accounts are welcome.
